Berger inked land lease agreement with BEZA


A land lease agreement signing ceremony was held on 17th October 2018 at a hotel in Dhaka, between United Kingdom-based world’s one of the most acknowledged paint producing companies, Berger Paints Bangladesh Limited and Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) for an allotment of 30 acres of land to Berger Paints Bangladesh Limited at Mirsarai Economic Zone.

Berger Paints Bangladesh Limited, a company of 200-year heritage on paint production, has been showing integrity ensuring quality production pertaining to their reputation and goodwill worldwide. They established the first factory at Kalurghat in Chattogram in 1970. Later on in 1999 Berger established a factory furnished with modern facilities in Savar, Dhaka.

Berger paints connected the bridge between technology and modernity in the realm of colours, besides they have achieved a reputation among masses for producing environmentally friendly and public demand based paints. In Bangladesh, they have been acknowledged as best quality paint producer, eight times in a row.

Berger paints are going to establish their third factory at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar (Mirsarai, Feni and Sitakunda). Here, they will establish a large factory, investing around BDT 200-250 crores, which is expected to be completed within the next 5 years.

In Mirsarai, Berger will extend their Water and Solvent-based paint factory, Emulsion paint, Resins paint, Central raw material warehouse, New strategic initiatives for future business diversification, and will build essential structures to extend future export markets.

It is a primary estimation that, about 300-400 people will get employment opportunity through these activities of Berger, which will initiate more such opportunities in future. In the allotted land necessary structures will be built, like – administrative building, warehouse, logistic area, garbage management plant, water purification plant and roads and so on. Dormitory, medical service centre, and training centre will be constructed in the rest green-zone area. Environment-friendly technology along with Environmental Management Plan will be taken to cast away detrimental impact on environment.

Mr. Md. Harunur Rashid, Executive Member, Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA); and Mr. Md. Abdul Khalek, Chief Financial Officer and Director, Berger Paints Bangladesh Limited signed the agreement.

Mr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Chief Coordinator (SDG), Prime Minister’s Office, was present in the ceremony as the Chief Guest. Mrs. Rupali Chowdhury, Managing Director, Berger Paints Bangladesh Limited was the Special Guest there. The ceremony was presided over by Mr. Paban Chowdhury, Executive Chairman, Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA).

In his speech, the Chief Guest of the ceremony, Mr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Chief Coordinator (SDG), Prime Minister’s Office said, “This is another curtain raiser to a new investment plan.” “This proves, Bangladesh has established an investment-friendly, sound environment through Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) and set a role model of development to the world”, he added. He also cited, “One of South Asia’s largest Economic Zone is going to be established at Mirsarai, which will usher an unforeseen revolution to industrialization of the country, eventually uplifting the living standard of people by achieving goals of sustainable development.”

Mr. Paban Chowdhury, Executive Chairman, Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) said in his address, “The sole activity of Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) is not only establishing industrial zones. We have been working regularly in coordination with several training organizations aiming at sufficient man-power production for this huge area engulfing economic zone. Besides, a policy undertaking is on progress on Green Economic Zone as a coping mechanism to Climate Change, which will be implemented soon.” “To ensure all services to Investors by December, establishment of ‘One stop service centre’ is almost done”, he said.

Mrs. Rupali Chowdhury, Managing Director, Berger Paints Bangladesh Limited in her address as the Special Guest said, “In Bangladeshi paint market Berger Paints Bangladesh Limited is reputed as a reliable brand. Establishing an industrial plant at Mirsarai is a milestone for Berger. With extended cooperation from Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) and directions from Prime Minister’s Office Berger will continue working in Bangladesh towards creating an environment-friendly paint industry.”

It is noted that, Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) have been working to create a full-phased industrial city named ‘Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar’ engulfing 30,000 acres of land at Mirsarai of Chattogram and Sonagazi of Feni districts. This industrial city is only 10 km away from Dhaka-Chattogram highway and 65 km from commercial capital Chattogram. There will be world-standard facilities in this industrial city, like – power plant, sea port, central garbage management and water purification plant, residential area, commercial area, university, and hospital etc. In this respect, with the cooperation of concerned departments of the government Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) constructed connecting roads, land development and protection bridges, and gas connecting lines.
